With the Andean mountain range taking up nearly a third of the country, and much of the rest of the land dominated by three large drainage basins covered with tropical jungle, Bolivia is an eco-travellers dream destination. The official capital city of Sucre, along with La Paz, which as the seat of government is considered by many to be the true heart of the country, are both located in the Andes so high altitudes are something that many Bolivians have to cope with on a daily basis. However, the commercial centre and largest city in the country, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, is in the tropical lowlands to the east of the mountain range, just 416 metres above sea level. With this in mind, if you would like to see something of city life in Bolivia but would prefer to avoid doing so in a high-altitude environment, you can visit the many art galleries and museums that can be found in Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

For beautiful scenery, Bolivia is hard to beat. The Uyuni Salt Pan, which is the largest salt flat on the planet and is one of the most stunning parts of the country, should be on every South American travel itinerary as far as we are concerned. Other areas of natural beauty that can be seen on our Bolivian tours include Lake Titicaca on the border with Peru, the Amazon rainforest in the far north, and the Atacama Desert in the south.

For a cultural, high-altitude experience, we recommend visiting La Paz, which is situated around 3,650 metres above sea level, surrounded by the mountain peaks of the Andes. Here you can explore narrow streets lined with colourful residences, beautifully-decorated colonial churches, and bustling outdoor markets. La Paz is also home to a variety of museums, many vibrant nightlife venues, and Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), which is a maze of canyons located roughly 10 kilometres from the centre of the city.
