Named after the legendary explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the 298 foot Magellan Explorer was launched in 2019 as the world’s first purpose built, ice class expedition cruise ship designed specifically for Antarctic air cruise operations.

What sets this journey apart is the experience itself. Instead of enduring the long and often challenging crossing of the Drake Passage, guests fly from Punta Arenas directly to King George Island in just two hours, stepping almost immediately into the Antarctic environment. With a maximum of only 73 guests and 60 crew members, the Magellan Explorer offers one of the most intimate expedition experiences in Antarctica, delivering highly personalised service and exceptional attention to detail throughout the voyage.

On board, the ship is designed to bring guests closer to the environment at every moment. The accessible bow provides an open vantage point close to sea level, ideal for wildlife observation and photography. The Grand Suite features a king size bed, separate lounge area with a sofa bed, and a private balcony with seating. All cabins include individually controlled heating, ensuite bathrooms with heated floors, and generous storage. Most cabins feature private balconies, and nearly all twin beds can be configured as king size beds for flexibility.

Expedition operations are supported by 10 Zodiac boats, launched from a dedicated embarkation area designed for efficiency and comfort. These boats allow frequent landings and close exploration of wildlife and ice formations. Optional activities such as kayaking, snowshoeing, and guided hiking offer deeper immersion into the Antarctic landscape.
